Bridge to...Fantasy Land

In 5th grade, our class read a Newbery Medal winner, Bridge to Terebithia.  I remember doing two activities with that book that I really enjoyed.

One thing that we did was keep a journal with the students teacher that was in our class.  She would ask us questions and when we answered them, she would write us feedback.  In fifth grade, I thought it was so cool to be communicating with the teacher by writing journal entries about the book or things relating to the book.  Any book can be used for this activity.

Another activity that we did that just made my mind wander and create was our own perfect little world.  For those who read Bridge to Terebithia, Terebithia is a an imaginary world created by two friends.  For a young child, their imaginations just run wild when they are given the freedom to do so, especially on an assignment.  Given minimum guidelines, your students can enjoy letting their imaginations go crazy with imagining their perfect world.  For each child, it will probably be different, so as a teacher, it will be very interesting to see what your students want in that perfect place.  This activity can be used for other books that have imaginary places as well.  At least I don't see why not!
